Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is a 2015 British-American action film directed by Christopher McQuarrie, which is the fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible series. It stars Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Ferguson and Ving Rhames. This film introduces Cruise's character Ethan Hunt to a world of espionage following his supposedly "retired" status. The film co-stars Alec Baldwin as CIA agent Alan Hunley and Sean Harris as cyber terrorist William Brandt. With the help of CIA agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) disguised as Mr. Hunt's lover Julia Meade, Hunt attempts to clear his name after a mission goes awry. A sequel, Mission: Impossible – Fallout , was released on July 27, 2018.In June 2011, Brad Bird signed on to direct "Mission: Impossible 4", but by August 2012 he had left the project due to story issues. In October 2012, following the box office success of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Paramount announced plans for a fifth Mission film with Christopher McQuarrie in talks to direct and Tom Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt. The studio was eager to start production in early 2013 for a release date in December 2014 or 2015. In 2013, the studio had meetings with potential writers. In February 2014, J. J. Abrams was one of several directors considered to direct the film, but he turned down the offer. In March 2014, it was reported that Josh Holloway and Jeremy Renner had been offered lead roles in the film. In December 2014, Paramount hired Christopher McQuarrie to direct Mission: Impossible 5 with a script by John Logan and Derek Haas. In January 2015, Tom Cruise signed on to return as Ethan Hunt, with negotiations for Jeremy Renner and Tom Cruise's rumored female co-lead from early development rounds still active as of February 2015. By March 2015, Paramount was still in talks with Jeremy Renner and that the "drastic re-shaping" of the film's script was underway. In October 2015, Paramount hired J. J. Abrams to direct the film. On February 21, 2016, it was announced that Brad Bird had signed on to direct the film with a script by John Logan and Derek Haas. On April 8, 2016, Paramount officially announced that Josh Holloway would return to play Agent William Brandt alongside Tom Cruise who returns as Ethan Hunt for a fifth installment of the franchise titled "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation". On April 12, 2016, Rebecca Ferguson joined the cast. On April 14, 2016, Alec Baldwin joined the cast. On April 20, 2016, Scott Eastwood and Simon Pegg were added to the cast of the film. On May 5, 2016, Ving Rhames was confirmed to return as Luther Stickell in a cameo appearance. Filming started in Paris in April 2016 and ended on June 27, 2016 in United Kingdom and in Norway in July 2016.
